Fernwood Garages

Grant Street

A couple of old garages in the Fernwood neighbourhood in Victoria.

These are within a couple of blocks of each other, but on either side of Cook Street which makes it seem as if they are miles apart.

    • Hi Toad! Thanks so much and my apologies for a tardy reply, I have had house guests and prepared a bunch of posts in advance for the duration of their stay.

    • It works for me. And that it is a rather grotty red door now helps. That angle of fading which must echo somehow bracing inside the door is intriguing too, or maybe for a time, after painting, there was bracing on the outside of the door?

    • Thanks Ken! When I saw the chairs (its a stack of them) I knew I had to get a photograph. I need to go back when the light is better – this side of the building was in shade.

As to the rule of thirds, slightly embarrassing to admit, but I have never really got my mind around how it works. I know it’s a simple concept, but I have not studied the ‘rules’ of composition and while I have read about it in passing, that little reading has left me a bit confused about how it works. I decided it did not matter to me to know the rules, I like taking pictures, but if it felt like homework (or any other kind of work) I fear it would no longer be fun. Not sure if that is laziness speaking, lack of dedication to the craft, or a legitimate need to have a bolt hole from the rest of life untainted by pressures to perform or advance or something.

Not sure if that makes sense to anyone else, but I don’t let it bother me.

    • Thank you Andy – there are still quite a few of these (now) rickety garages around this neighbourhood, but many are not easily photographed from the street.

    • Hi Richard. That is one of the things I like about that photo, it implies things about what goes on in the garage in the way of fixing cars.
However, that car is sitting in the same spot on the google earth street view from a couple of years ago, so might be implying the wrong things.
