Sign of Art?
A building in Portland across from OMSI.
I can’t figure out if the framework is deliberate art, or the remnants of a large sign of some kind.
It is weird how some of the black beams are quite reflective and others are not.
So, I wrote all that, not that that is much, and then decided to research it.
It is a kinetic water sculpture, or fountain if you like, called Birds on a Wire by David Curt Morris.
You can find out more about it this link.
I could not find a video of it in operations, but did not look all that hard.

I missed this when I was in Portland, so obviously I’ll need to go back.
Also, I am very fond of the way you included the Oregon Tile and Marble sign in the corner…

Hi Melinda – if you get back to Portland then it is close to Victoria (hint), or perhaps we could meet there. I like that sign too, glad you noticed it!

Thanks Sherry – if you find one, please add a link in the comments. I would like to see it. I had a bit of a look and I am sure there must be one, but perhaps not labelled in any obvious way.

I love the thought that this could be a large anonymous sculpture just waiting to be noticed by someone.

Me too. And to an extent it is as it no longer seems to work as a kinetic water sculpture which is what it turns out to be.

A kinetic water sculpture! Wouldn’t it start to work whenever it rains?

I think it needs water piped in to it. I looked for video, but could find none. It was installed more than 20 years ago. The pipes fill up, bow over and release water. Said to look like birds on a line.

It sounds a bit like a water clock that used to be in Covent Garden in London. What a shame that it’s no longer being maintained. 🙁

I agree, it would have been fascinating to see it in action. Perhaps it will be again, or maybe it was just the season.

And somehow there happened to be a bird on the sculpture! Perfect.
Love the moodiness in this.

Hi Karen! Thanks for the comment. The bird IS perfect. Most of the visit in Portland was nicer weather than this, though the drive back north was one of those horrid heavy rains that turn highways into rivers.
