Tamarack Buds
This Tamarack is a deciduous conifer, shedding its needles every fall.
Tamarack means wood used for snowshoes, in the Algonquian subfamily of languages.
This picture was taken a few weeks ago and the tree is bright green now.
Canon Elan IIe, Canon EF 50/1.4 USM, Rollei CR200, commercially processed, scanned at home and adjusted in Lightroom
I love how those leaves look like tiny tassels!

Hi Melinda, they are like that. It is such a strange thing to see needles emerge in the spring like that. I wonder if there is a difference between leaves and needles when it comes down to it. One day, I will look it up.

You know what you need? A Research Department.

What a novel idea! Are you volunteering? Would you mind trotting off to the botany folks at the university and picking their brains, taking a few notes, and transcribing them into my comments section, please?

Yeah, but he’s pretty entertaining. That’s worth something, don’t you think?

Some might think so. But my blog isn’t all that entertaining so it could be a mistake…

I hate to start an international incident, but I think you’re wrong: your blog entertains me all the time….

That is a bit worrying, because my understanding is that Texans have a very high threshold for finding something entertaining. At least something not including oil drenched cowboy hats, spurs and guns. Not to promulgate an international incident, or anything.

Is “a very high threshold for finding something entertaining” a polite, Canadian way to say we are “easily entertained” (which is Texan for “she’s a little…slow-headed.”)?

Quite the opposite, given the lack of oil, hat, boots and guns in this post, and generally in this blog.

Thank you Mark. I love what this grainy film does to the out of focus areas. The lens is one I frequently use on my DSLR and I have never had this feel on digital.
