Swan Lake Path
The past two days I have posted closeups from Swan Lake which are necessarily autumnal. Today includes a few pictures which show the broader setting for those macro photos that were taken along the path. The path rings the lake, except just south-west of the Nature House where it crosses a floating boardwalk that also passes over a wetland with shrubs and through a cattail swamp, and back to higher dry land. Much of the path is on boardwalks, but the southern half is all on dirt, and some of it is a bit steep and rocky, so not necessarily best for people with mobility difficulties. However, around the nature house there are wheel chair accessible areas, including a floating dock, so there is something for everyone in this small park.
Walking at a good clip, it is about 45 minutes to circumnavigate the pond. If carrying a camera and looking for shots, well, you could spend half a day doing that. Don’t expect to walk your dog here, that is not permitted. However the south side of the path joins in 3 or 4 places with the Galloping Goose Trail, which is well suited for a long walk with a dog. You could park behind the Saanich Municipal Hall and walk on the Goose for a while with your dog, and then leave him in the car for an hour while you explore the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary. A nice outing for the whole family.

I used to go for walks round there when living in Northridge. I dont know if they still exist but there was a Friends of Swan Lake group you can give donations to. Nice thing about the place is it looks different every day. Mario.

Hi mario – someone is giving them money – they can afford to replace piers and repair walkways and rejuvenate some areas and so on. I bet if you went to the nature house with cash you would be welcomed with open arms, or hands :). But, it is very obvious that anyone, wallet or no, is most welcome to visit – it is a really friendly place.

Hi Barbara – just think, a ferry ride on the clipper and you could walk around it too.

Very beautiful pictures…that “gazebo” shaped dock is really cool.

Thanks – not hard to get good pictures in a beautiful setting like that. That dock is the new one for wheel chair access. I think it will blend in a bit over the next few years. It is nice out there, a good place to look at the margins of the lake that are too wet to get to on foot and to see the water birds and so on.
