Street Level View

Today my attention was caught by the stems of leaves lying on the road surface. You know that fall is progressing when the leaves are mostly stems. These stems were nicely lit and glowing on the road surface. I don’t think I captured what I saw, and perhaps that was partly because my glasses had darkened up. But, I did have an interesting time with the camera resting on the road surface or near to it, with traffic passing by. And quizzical pedestrians. With nosy dogs.

The picture below is the furthest away from what I saw through the windshield when I came upon this place. And thank goodness really, if my eyesight was this bad, I would be a menace on the road. This is one of those pictures where the finger hovers over the delete key –  I had not got all the foreground in this shot as I was using the screen rather than the view finder and not wanting to lie on the wet road surface I got it wrong a couple of times. However, there seemed  something worthwhile in this image that was revealed with a small crop and rotation. To me it speaks of a landscape at sunset.

What I like about the following picture is the aquatic feel – as if the camera lens is half-submerged into a stream or pond and the stem of leaf is floating. Taken at f1.4.

    • Hey Doug – glad you like that one too – it is my favourite as well, and I did have it as the lead image in the post, then moved it for the sake of the story line. I like the unexpected feel from a bit of damp pavement.

    • Thanks Laurie. The dog actually reflected quite a lot of light back onto the pavement as it walked by. I noticed the light go by as I was taking the picture and that is what caused me to click the shutter – I was just waiting for them to get out of my shot. Little did I know.

      • Interesting. I posted a photo recently with a similar story – I was trying to catch the scene “sans” dog paw prints, but I was too late on one of the images and a paw print is prominent in it. (It’s the photo called “Dogging the Ebb”, in the batch of images at bottom of my most recent post.) To my surprise, I kind of like this “ruined” photo so have used it.

      • Laurie – thanks for letting me know of those pictures – they are great landscape shots in miniature. The dog paw print works well too, even if a bit surreal in scale.
