Dog Drain
This is the third and least of the storm drains in Ross Bay, the main subject for this topic is in the background. This is another one that only shows at lower tides, and is in any case not so interesting to me.
At least not without a dog. The owner is just off-screen to the right throwing sticks out to sea for this, and another, to fetch.
I was amused to see a few days ago Steve Barnes’ post which sure looks like a storm drain, with dog, and gull. I took this shot last Saturday and he posted his shot Sunday. There is not a lot else in common between his Lensbaby creation and these shots. Still, I like these coincidences between widely separated blogs that are only connected because we sometimes look at each others’ photographs.
I am pretty sure I prefer the monochrome versions of these two images, but include the colour of the lower one because I know that some of you usually prefer the beach shots to have colour.

Like the 1st b&w one.

I agree, the B&W versions are better. And the dog is priceless and also give it some scale. Great shots.

Thanks Ken. Helps that the dog is very much in motion too – more interesting that if it were just gazing out to see, or snoozing curled up on the beach. I think.

I like the threatening look of the mountains in the 2nd monochrome

Thanks Valerie. The wide angle lens does not do them justice at all. I need to get down there with a long lens to really get those mountains looming.

The first photo is definitely a winner.

Thank you Joseph. I like it too, all that energy in the dog.

While the greens caught my eye in the colour version, I too like the B&W version (especially the first). Looks like the dog was having a blast that day, thank you for sharing.

Hi David – thank you. Maybe I am misjudging my audience.
That dog was having a blast. So was the other one which really liked to swim and was often far offshore paddling like mad with a stick.

I agree, the monochrom has a special depth. I like the idea of the drain being hidden beneath the tide – it’s poetic in a way. Lovely shots.

Thanks Ryan. I suppose there is poetry in that idea. Maybe that is what draws me to photograph these otherwise nondescript things.

Well, I love your vision – unconscious or not.

Thanks Ryan – the unconscious part leaves me feeling a bit fraudulent some days 🙂 Not enough to stop me for carrying on though.
