Equisetum

The lower part of the fire access road into the Friday Harbor marine station’s forested land is lined with horse tails (Equisetum).

Although these are a wonderful green, I thought the black and white conversion worked well to show off the texture and the bokeh it produces with a shallow depth of field.

This post was scheduled in advance as I am out of town and completely off grid for the first two weeks of June. Naturally I won’t be answering any comments until I get back – but please, don’t hesitate to comment, I will do my best to respond when I can.

    • Thank you Ryan! I have just spent two weeks taking technical photographs for an archaeology project and I don’t think they would have appreciated this approach to documentation so I had to suppress it a bit, though I bit did creep in. It will be interesting for me to see which images they choose for their powerpoint presentations and other uses.

    • Hi Valerie – thanks for commenting even though I am away. I have always liked equisetum ever since I learned as a kid that giant forms of this plant co-existed with dinosaurs. Now that I am becoming a bit of a dinosaur (according to my youngest colleague) I like them even more.
