Strait Masts II
A few weeks ago I showed this same view of a schooner in a patch of sunlight in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but with a 100mm lens. This view was taken immediately before I swapped out the wide-angle lens for something longer, and I knew I need to get in closer to make the most of this lighting.
The wider angle means the schooner is a secondary subject. Still, the ship is an important element of the picture. I prefer the telephoto shots, but this one has a lot going for it too.

I agree with Andy, I believe the sky really makes the image (the schooner is a bonus for our viewing pleasure)!

Thanks David. I probably would have taken the shot without the schooner just for the sky and patch of light on the water.

It does have a lot going for it because it has a lot of elements that make for a great photo. Andy’s right, the sky is special but so is the lighting and the color. Well done.

Thanks Ken! The colour is in part thanks to the hdr processing. I had some trouble with the foreground and in the end isolated just one exposure. It is not exactly how I would want the foreground, but it works ok.

The sky really makes this picture special. It would be special without the schooner, the schooner just adds that extra ingredient
