Olympic Ridge with Moon

IMG_3716-Edit

More from last weekend’s trip to north west Washington State. Today is another shot from the Olympic Mountains, this one taken looking up a slope sprinkled with avalanche lilies (Erythronium montanum) to a sky delicately graced by a moon.

I thought this shot would work well in black and white as well, almost like a night shot with the dark sky.

  3. I’m on the fence as to which one I like better but I’m leaning (slightly) to the color version just because it looks like such a gorgeous day and one you’ll remember for a long time.

    • Thanks Ken. It was a lovely and very memorable day. One worth repeating, but the chances of such perfect weather being available at the right time are really very small.

  4. So…I am looking at this on my laptop, and see only the first shot. As I scroll down, I think, “Wow – that’s nice. I wonder how it would look in black and white?”…and then there it was, in black and white. So, thanks for including that version! It’s a good shot, either way.

    • Thanks Melinda. It is hard to choose between them, but I think ultimately I have to settle on the colour as it carries more of what made that such a beautiful day – the blueness of the sky and the rare total absence of a single cloud, not even one hovering near a peak.

  5. Now that’s what I call a perfect day! Did you use a polarizer to get that deep blue sky. I wonder what the B&W version would look like through an infrared pre-set in Topaz, or one of the other plug-ins that has a B&W pre-set?

    • Hi Andy. Yes, I used a polarizer. I was mainly using it to cut through the haze in shots of the mountain slopes, but it sure did a nice job on the sky too.

That is an interesting idea – I will have to try it, if I have the relevant version of the software. I bought their bundle, but have not finished exploring it, and also have Clarity (not in the bundle).

      • The place to go for Infra-Ref is Topaz B&W effects. then select Stylized Collection (third down on Lt side) and you will then find four Infra-Red presets. Sometimes they produce results that are little different from other presets, light greens work best, the greens in the image may be too dark for the best results. Always worth a try…

      • Thanks Andy. I have not delved into B&W effects yet, but will now that I am prompted. It seems this would be a good picture to start with!
