We went to the Pride Parade and Festival yesterday. Talk about colour! Yesterday’s shot is punted out of the field compared to this event. It was a lot of fun, everyone is so upbeat, no one minds having their photos taken, and there is a great deal to see. I ran into a bunch of friends, and family. It was a good time.
I have loaded a really big gallery – I hope you enjoy it. I think the small thumbnails won’t take too long to load, but perhaps the gallery will be slow – sorry about that. Before the galley are a few of my favourite shots, though quite a few of the others please me a lot as well.
Some shots are all about the colour. This is one of them. This dress was in a thrift store that I was passing through at lunch time.
This house is really very industrial in its feel. It does reflect the sunset nicely, but to me sends a message that the house is not very friendly. It just seems a bit harsh, even when nicely lit. Not even birds are welcome.
I have seen this guy panhandling for years in this area, though the walker is more recent. I have never spoken with him. It seems like a lonely occupation, but like most people I know most panhandlers make me nervous, and so I have never made a serious attempt to engage with any of them. Street musicians are a different story and since I can approach them and chat and ask to take their picture, why not this guy? Just a lack of guts I suppose.
One of the reasons I have been coveting a small digital camera is the ability to take street photographs without being obvious about it, and which can be in the pocket between shots.
Thus it is kind of fun to have a work camera that fits the bill, and which I can try out prior to making a purchase of my own. The lens on this camera is anything but discreet, but it focuses extremely quickly if I point it at the right place. These are all shot from the waist in the Sunday Market at Market Square, a mode of shooting that will take a lot more practice, if I continue. While I like some of the results, it does not feel right to photograph this way. But how do you ask these oh-so-stylish shoppers if you can shoot them, and not wreck the moment?
It was one of those summer days yesterday, a national holiday, that takes you outdoors and keeps you there. In these photos are a couple of my neighbours who launched their kayaks from the beach at the end of the road.
While in Tofino a few weeks ago for work I managed a short walk around one part of town. The place has changed a lot since I worked there for an extended period in 1982, but there are still a few of the nice old houses to be seen, mostly well cared for. This is a selection of pictures from that walk.
