Piano, Music Details

.

One prominent part of my surroundings is music. I have a son that plays music on many different instruments. There is no real way to evoke the sound of music in a picture (well not at my level of photography anyway). Despite that, here are some pictures I took a few years ago when our “new” piano arrived – they will have to stand for this part of my environment. It is a Yamaha U7, about 25 years old when I took these pictures early in 2008, and is a very fine upright. Pianos are wonderfully complex machines, and these pictures illustrate that complexity, and in so doing hint at the range of music possible.

Pebble Beach, Harling Point

I have been trying for the past month or so to get a good photo of what is locally referred to as Pebble Beach. This is the beach on the east side of Harling Point, which lies below Maquinna Street and Trafalgar Park. It can be accessed from the intersection of Maquinna and Lorne Terrace, or down a path from the King George Terrace lookout. For some reason it is a difficult subject for me – perhaps I lack the best lense, or just don’t have what it takes. But so far, I have not really done it justice. In spite of that, and because I am without camera all weekend, I am putting out some of the few shots of pebble beach that I have not (yet) deleted.

Garden, Bumps on a Log

I keep being drawn back to this photo that I took about a month ago in my garden. I don’t really understand what it is that attracts me – the blurry colour or the lighting or something. I wish I did understand better so that I could learn from it.

Introducing the Cat

The cat is the centre of our universe, so she thinks. We all revolve around her, with the sole purpose of keeping her well fed, warm, dry and otherwise comfortable. A typical cat in nearly every way. Here are some pictures of her, I expect you will see many more as this blog progresses through my surroundings.

Painted Stair Edges

After attending an awards ceremony at Camosun College I left the Young Building via these stairs that lead down towards the library. The yellow (top and bottom step only) and white paint strips really jumped out at me. But, in colour the image did not work the way I wanted it to. In fact, I am not totally happy with these images either and maybe one day I will try again. I like it that the chalk graffiti exhorts the students to think. Such great advice.

Kitty Islet Poppies

.

When I was at Kitty Islet to photograph the Songhees history cairn I found these poppies next to the stairs down to the beach. I have always liked California poppy, even though they are an escaped cultivar, they seem to fit well into this area of dry slopes.

Leek Pie

Leek pie is frequently served in my household. My wife is a vegetarian, and some of the kids have been at one time or another. It is really quite easy to make and it occured to me, in the frenzy of getting Thanksgiving dinner prepared yesterday, that I should photograph some of the stages of making a leek pie to share with people. And, there was no way I was going to have time to get out and take pictures. The lighting was not great, so the depth of field is barely tolerable in some photos, but that is what I had to work with and I expect you get the idea.  I have been asked for this recipe time and again over the years – if it ever happens again, I will just send the person to my blog, and enlarge my audience too (wink).  I probably learned this recipe from my mother, but don’t really remember anymore. This is not really a fixed recipe – it is just something I make and the ingredients depend on what is to hand and how absent minded I am that day. The leeks came from Moss Street market  – so did the other vegetables visible in the background of the picture above.
