Stucco Sunset

Yesterday afternoon the setting sun shone through my car port like a beacon. It lit the light yellow stucco in the most spectacular way. I had the polarizing filter on the camera and here is the result. No colour or contrast adjustments here – only a bit of a crop and a 180 rotation of the top image. I am pretty stunned by this outcome, it’s as if the wall were layered with gold leaf.

In the lower picture you can see the context, with the real colour of the stucco in the shaded area to the left (that wall is a bit lighter in colour than the lit as it has faded)

    • I am discovering that taking pictures helps me to find new ways to see things. I probably saw that lighting once or twice in the 15 years I have lived here, but I don’t remember it likely which means if I did observe it, I did not really see it.

    • Thanks Toad – it seems that much more satisfying when something like this just drops in your lap, when you are not even looking, but have to go and dig the camera out of its bag. I have been looking at other photos and discover that other people have been capturing the same colour. I had been aware of this colour in nature, but only in a peripheral kind of way. I thought I had captured something really special, but realise now that it is more common that I had noticed. I am glad that you see more in them than colour as they probably will not stand up for long on colour alone.

  1. It is always good to see someone who uses every opportunity to experiment with their camera. Our natural light causes some beautiful imagery and you have captured some magic.

    • Hello cstgpa – I am so glad you have come to my blog – it has brought me to your terrific pictures. I am so jealous you have a spam comment from “ocular migraine” on your about page, what a compliment! And thank you for your comment on my pictures. This one pretty much beat me over the head with “photograph me” messages. I can see a bit of that surface from where I sit through a window in the door.

    • Welcome to my blog Aware – I have just started looking at yours and there are some great pictures there, and I like the text you put with them too. “Dear Heather … ” :). I too like the simple things, staring you in the face. This wall is immediately outside and facing my back door – I see it every time I leave the house, or let the Cat out or greet a visitor. Usually it is drab, a bit scuffed, makes me think I really should paint the house, again. Yesterday it revealed a hidden personality and I will never think of it the same way again.
