Well Lit Royal
The Royal Theatre is one of two old and quite large theatres in Victoria. The Royal is home to the symphony and opera and hosts many of the touring shows. It has an interesting façade that was recently renovated, but I am showing just a small part of its east wall, from behind a neighbouring building. I really liked the light and the way it was reflecting to give a glow to the side of the theatre. This image works so much better in black and white that I hesitate to even include a colour version. Sometime I will take some pictures of the front of the building, but as it faces north, finding really nice light probably means waiting to the middle of June near sunrise or sunset. Or maybe just getting lucky at some other time.

I love them both but really do slightly prefer the b&w version. There is something dramatic about it. I really love the composition and framing you’ve employed here my friend. A top drawer image!

Hmmm, I always like B&W for playing up architectural details as well as focusing on shadows and light – nicely done!

Thank you composer. I really like the textured surfaces on some buildings, in good light they can make very satisfying photographs.

I like the black & white version too, but also find the light and reflections interesting in the color version. 🙂

Hi Robin, thanks for coming by again – I am going to try and look at them through Joseph’s eyes tonight to see if I can see more in the colour version than I have so far. It was the light that really attracted my attention, and which I was trying to catch – especially the light glowing around the white parts of the theatre and the branches in front. I think that part works really well in b&w and so overall what I was shooting for “colours” my response to these photos. I do like the greater detail in the blue areas of the colour version – like the red reflections in the windows and the lettering on the round vent which don’t show at all in the b&w.

I really like the black and white as well, but then baby blue is not really my thing either.

Hi Branta, glad we are on the same page with this one. Maybe if I knew how to do a colour replace for the blue it would be possible to make it more pleasing to my eye.

In the second image light, colors, and reflections all work together to make a very nice photo. A pleasure to look at.

Good morning Joseph – I was sure that everyone would agree with me about the b&w working better than the colour. I think I am biased against the colour one because I am not a big fan of that colour of blue, at least not a big swathe of it like that. However, I totally agree about the light and reflections for this scene. And such a nice surprise it was too – I came at this scene through an under-building parking garage which is to the left of the shot, not expecting anything much, just taking a short cut.
