Tables for Picnics
On my trip to Friday Harbor I visited San Juan County Park on the west side of San Juan Island. It is located beside Smallpox Bay – there must be a story there. The park is a campground, very popular with the cycling crowd, and often difficult to get into. We had a bright but cloudy sky in the late afternoon which was one of the things that prompted me to convert these photos to black and white.
I like this style of picnic table, with its curves, simple and elegant form and utilitarian functionality. It looks good and it works well. It probably is not very expensive either.

This post was scheduled in advance as I am out of town and completely off grid for the first two weeks of June. Naturally I won’t be answering any comments until I get back – but please, don’t hesitate to comment, I will do my best to respond when I can.

Beautiful. I love the height in the first and second photos. The contrast is lovely.

Ryan! Another Haiku gracing the pages of my blog! I love it, the words are perfect for the subject matter. Thank you so much 🙂 What a privilege.

Nicely done! Great shots, my friend, the b&w processing really delivers all the inherent drama in the scenes perfectly!

Thanks so much Toad – I am glad it works for you. B&W seemed the best way to go, and revisiting this blog after my time away, it still seems like the best choice (not always the case when I come back to something I have done).

I adore this photo series! The subject is so tiny in the first photo, and when I crave to take a closer look, that’s exactly what you let us do!
I hope you’re enjoying your trip 🙂

Hi James – I had a great trip. Even the rain was fine. I was a bit cold some days, but that was partly my fault for not layering properly. The project was really exciting (10,700 year old wood and bone artifacts!!).
Your comment gives me the idea that it would be interesting to do a series like this but to continue with the macro lens, including that 5x macro I rented a while back, and just zoom in to the tiniest piece of the subject matter. I will have to find a suitable subject and do that sometime.

Hi Bob – thanks. Getting off-grid is really a great thing for me, it rejuvenates me in ways that other activities fail to. I enjoyed every minute of it.
I hope your getaway is already underway, and as enjoyable as mine has been.
