Surrounded Cross
A cross in Ross Bay Cemetery surrounded with a granite curb. I was looking to capture the brightness of the light coloured stone against a dark yew hedge that borders the north boundary of the graveyard. High contrast processing seemed the best way to emphasize what I was seeing.

I find this very interesting as a photograph because I like the high contrast approach and the graphic nature of the lines. I’m also a little bewildered by the graveside itself since I’ve never seen one with a “border” around it.

Hi Ken, I am glad you like it!
The “border” is very common in this cemetery. On the bus ride home today, I was looking down row upon row of graves bordered like this, some filled in with concrete, some tiled over the concrete, some bordered with concrete and others like this one with granite. There are hundreds of them in this cemetery. I suspect they are from a certain time period – probably late 1800’s and early 1900’s (this one is 1906). Some of these borders have a family name engraved in them, just the surname usually, which indicates to me that there are multiple burials in the enclosure. It makes for an interesting landscape of graves. The vantage from the bus made me realise I have not got a good shot down the avenues yet, and that in the right light it would be worth it. I need to figure out how to get high enough – step ladder perhaps.

Another very nice, moody cemetery shot! I like the way you framed this one, with the top of the cross and the corner of the curb almost touching the edge of the photo. It gives a good balance.

Thanks Melinda! I was a bit worried that there was not enough space above the cross – and I think if I were taking the shot again I would step back a couple of paces.
