Dockside View II
Another from my Dockside Green series that ran a few weeks ago. This is a view up the Gorge past the Bay Street Bridge. An early post, Dockside View, could probably be made into a panorama with this shot on the right side, though there was better lighting just a minute or so later when it was taken.

I agree with Ken – I like the b&w version better, (That’s not really a surprise, I guess, since I have a tendency to trend toward b&w!)
If this had been my photo, I would have waited for the bus to get out of the frame. But I see that it works well, as it gives a sense of scale.

Thanks Melinda. Glad you like the black and white. The trouble with the bus was that there was getting to be a lot of traffic and this was a quiet moment on the bridge. I tried for no traffic. I like the placement of the bus in the colour photo better – in fact, in that one I chose the bus from the best bracket (not the 0EV that I used for the black and white shot) when deghosting in Photomatix. And it does give a sense of scale.

I like them both very much – perhaps prefer the colour one though. Less dramatic, but perhaps a bit more contemplative.

Thank you Laurie. I can see you preferring a contemplative version!

I think this is equally successful in colour or B&W. Perhaps because the colour image is almost monochromatic.

Hi Andy – thanks for that observation. It was pretty much blue hour, interrupted by the rising sun peeking through slits in the clouds. I reduce the blue by a small amount just to bring out a bit of colour, especially in the bridge. I also spent a fair bit of effort brightening up the bridge in both shots.

Personally, I like the B&W version slightly better. It seems more dramatic than the color. I like the glassy water and the bridge itself is beautiful. I also agree that it would be a great panoramic since I think it could easily crop to 16:9.

Thanks Ken. That is my preference too, though I could live with the colour just fine. I am not sure why, when the light was so much nice a few minutes later and I took the shot at the end of the bridge, that I didn’t swing around and get a shot of the bridge lit up with orange early morning light. I seems rather thoughtless now.
