Leaf Dweller

A leaf dweller in the garden taken this summer at the same time as the teazle leaves I showed a few days ago. I like how this insect (aphid?) is translucent in its extremities.

I like the processing on this – it’s like a monochromatic watercolor.

Thanks Melinda – that comes from sliding some of the colour bars to an extreme in the black and white processing, but then you probably knew that!

Maybe I did….or maybe I was trying to get your secret processing techniques….

If so, then I guess I blew it, eh? On the other hand, it does things to the image that most people probably don’t like, such as undermining the clarity of the edges. Which is where the watercolour aspect comes in I suppose.

The way I see it is: it’s your image and if you want to undermine the clarity of the edges, you ought to be able to! I may not like it (although I do, actually) but it’s not MY image….

True. But people looking to steal MY methods should at least like them before they steal them (or is that idealistic). If I let the secret out for a method that people mostly don’t like, then the rate of theft will be lower, won’t it? And that way it will be more mine, won’t it?
Except a friend was quoting to me the other day someone, a musician, a jazz musician I think, who said you don’t really own something until you’ve given it away. So fill your boots:)

Why else would someone steal your method, other than liking it?
And, now, let’s review the lyrics from Bruce Cockburn’s song “Give it Away”:
I’ve got this thing in my heart
I must give you today
It only lives when you
Give it away.
So, there you have it.

Well that is interesting. But it is not who my friend was quoting. He said the guy’s name, I just have forgotten it. Maybe him and Bruce are quoting the same person. I will have to find out who my friend was thinking of.
People steal things all the time that they don’t even like. Don’t ask me why.

It’s curious to think some folks think of these as garden pests and some (myself included) think they are interesting photographic material.

Hi Ken – I agree that they are subjects for my camera, not pests. But then the benign neglect in my garden tells that story to pretty anyone that walks down the street.
