Excessive Light

Simplicity in communication does not seem to be the objective at this intersection.

What an interesting find and an interesting presentation, Ehpem! Yikes, Victoria would lose it’s collective mind if an intersection like this appeared… wait, I haven’t been to Douglas and Hillside for a bit now…?

Ha! The old roundabout location, one of the dreariest intersections in Victoria – the hours I have sat there waiting for a light to change can’t be counted. However, I think it has fewer lights than this example, and it controls traffic flow from 10 converging lanes, while the ones I show here are for four converging lanes of traffic.

Doing the triptych has really added impact to this one – as your friends south of the border would say “are they for real in that town ?”
I can see why you pulled over….

Thanks David – it is a totally unreal conglomeration of signals. Perhaps the city lighting engineer has the only car body shop business on the side?

It makes my head spin but it’s beautiful and confusing at the same time.

That is how I felt driving the car – so much so I had to pull over and take a picture. It seems to be the kind of intersection that culls out the drunk drivers.

Mark’s right – it IS a nice presentation. I like the way it emphasizes the confusing array of traffic signals!

Thanks Melinda! This was a very simple intersection – you know the kind – 2 streets crossing each other. But, they don’t have many light-controlled interesections in Port Townsend, so maybe this is how they store fixtures in the event they need them somewhere else.

Storing extra traffic signals like that is a really good idea, and I am surprised that more municipalities haven’t done this. Maybe I should run for City Council, and then use my power* to enact this plan here in Lubbock…..
*I once heard a city described as having a “weak mayor – stupid council” system of government. Only stupid council members think there’s any real power to be had by virtue of the office (in Lubbock, anyway).

Thanks Mark! I was uncertain about the borders, too fat I thought, but that was the only way I could make them all the same with the software I was using.
