Observed Leap
I was shooting the railing and shadows on the side of the Gonzales Hill Observatory when these people, and their dog, leaped into my photo. Of course I just kept on shooting. This would explain the focus point, but I think it works just fine the way it is. However, I can’t make up my mind about colour or black and white. It is a shame to lose the red on the dog harness, but other than that I see little to choose between them.
For some reason I cropped them a bit differently – I don’t remember why, and it was only two days ago. Bad sign, that.

I really love this shot. While I agree with the others that the B/W looks a bit mysterious and cool, the color version is my pick here–the railing pops away from the white wall to add depth, and the jumpers look more dramatic to me against the expansive blue background.

Hi gbebensee – welcome to my blog and thanks for commenting, I am always interested to hear why people like one or another version of a photo. Your comment about the added depth is a good one. I will have to consider that a bit more for the other photos of this location that I have not yet posted.

I’m for the black and white. It has more mystery.

Thanks Linda – looks like it was pretty unanimous for the black and white. I suppose I could have retained the red harness in the black and white, but that would likely have been distracting so I did not even try.

You know which one I prefer.
I don’t mind the focus not being on the leaping people and dog – it’s more interesting this way.

Ha, I do know. And thanks for finding that focus more interesting; I thought it worked out just fine, just enough depth of field to not obscure them, but enough out of focus to accentuate the depth.

Of course, I just assumed that you planned it that way. Right?

I’d go with black and white, and push the contrast further (have been having some fun doing this with some pictures lately) 🙂

HI Angelina. I did play with the contrast a bit on this photo, to bring up the tree shadow on the building. I stopped without going much further in order to retain detail in the people. However, my shots of just the shadow, which will show up around here some day, are another matter.

Great non-Euclidian railings. I hope the poodle didnt come a cropper, leaping off into space like that

That little dog was all over the hillside, totally unconcerned about things like drops to hard rocks far below.

Nice to see an action photo from you. Very cool!

Now that you mention it, there are not all that many are there? Not being a street photographer, and usually wanting people out of the view, it is not often that I get a shot.

It worked really well, even if it wasn’t deliberate.
