Viewing Towers Today

2014-FM-001-032-2

Another shot of View Towers, which has to be one of the most challenging buildings to photograph in Victoria. It is such a monolithic slab.

I spent quite of lot of time around the main entrance yesterday, but that film is still in a camera.

  1. Residential housing is usually a bland subject. Most of the new buildings around here are not very nice, in my opinion. So what is the job of the photographer? To document the building or to try to show it in the best light. It’s a tough decision but I like your approach of including surrounding elements to increase interest, at least photographically.

    • Hi Ken. We have the same problem – many dull buildings, safe architectural constructs that have no extra costs for the developer. However, there are some good new buildings too and I have been taking a few pictures of those recently, which eventually will show up here. However, View Towers is, in some ways, more interesting to photograph because it dominates that part of town, and is so hideous that it is fun to either emphasize the ugly, or find beautiful corners.

Doing either represents well the range of residents – many great people live here for the cheap rent and terrific views, but it also has far more than its fair share of the most difficult and strung out types.
