I wonder if there is an above-ground coffin in this, or if the monument is just plunked on top of the grave.

Maybe the lid comes off and you can add ashes of urns?

It all seems a bit mysterious and I doubt it is meant to.

At one time people were used to going to funerals and cemeteries and seeing the burial act.

Not so much now, with cremations and lower mortality and so on.
