Thetis Lake II

Thetis Lake

IMG_8913-Edit

A couple of days ago I went for a walk with my daughter and granddaughter around Thetis Lake. It was a beautiful morning, and I am sure you will see more photographs from that walk. In the meantime, here is one of the faint mist on the lake.

Half-frame Street Musician

2013-HF-2-(75)-2

Another in the recent series of half-frame photos. I got interested in photographing this accordion playing busker after I missed what must be the best street musician shot of 2013 – he was playing in his little shelter with snow blowing around him on a cold morning and I did not have a camera.

The top photo is taken after I asked him if I could and the lower shots were taken a week or two earlier while he was setting up in the morning, hanging his Christmas decorations. The cart is very cleverly arranged to hold all his gear, and to open up into a shelter for him. He seems to be outside playing most days of the week. The street entertainer regulations mean that he has to move every couple of hours, and move more than just a block or so.

Half-frame Ferris

2013-HF-02 (27)
Another in the recent series of half-frame photos, again showing a diptych and the triptych that goes with it. These images are really exposure tests, less with the idea of combing adjacent images and more to see if I could wing it without a light meter and get a decent exposure. But they fall nicely beside each other on the negative, so here they are. I was dropping my son off downtown when I passed this location. I put the camera on a concrete wall and held it as steady as I could – the first one is tilted on the rear edge. The other two have the strap jammed under the front edge of the camera which I then pressed onto it. I guessed wildly at an exposure, approximating 1 second on the first two, and two seconds on the last.

Horizon(tal) XI

IMG_8575-Edit 774 774-2

This is a revisit to Horizon(tal) X, based on an interesting suggestion in its comments section from Andy Hooker of the LensScaper and iSighting photography blogs.

Andy suggested that I take a vertical slice out of the image, resize it to the original dimensions and then give it a motion blur, all in the name of making it truly abstract. So, for the first time, I cracked open Photoshop Elements (v.9 which came with my scanner) and had a go. After a few false starts while trying to get the changes to stick, I managed to implement his suggestions.

The top image is the process Andy suggested, the second version is applying the same method but without cropping. The third version is the original processed image, which is a different one than I presented as Horizon(tal) X, though very similar. It has a bit more light in the dark blue that I thought might look good in the even more abstracted version. The last image is the largely unprocessed original (a touch of sharpening and horizon straightening) – you can see that I was stretching pretty far to find some light on this very gloomy day. And since there really was none, it seems appropriate to completely abstract this photo. I still like what I did with it in the first place, but I do like the first shot a lot too. Great suggestion Andy!

Light Graffiti

2013-HF-02 (5)

Even though View Towers is a pretty hideous building I keep on finding things to photograph on its outside. This is the north side garage area with light reflecting from a small building opposite, painted on like unexpected graffiti.

Today’s photo is another single shot from the half-frame Olympus Pen.  Other shots of (or up against) View Towers, can be found here.
