Half-frame Sculptures

2013-HF-02 (30)
Another in the recent series of half-frame photos, including triptyches and the occasional diptych. Above is a sculpture outside of Winchester Galleries in Oak Bay, and below is a fountain in the same area, and a patio in front of Ottavio’s next door, a great delicatessen which has shown up in this blog before, complete with crow toes (though not for sale in the deli).

Horizon(tal) X

IMG_8580-Edit

It has been rainy with low dense cloud for a couple of days now, but this strip of light over by the Olympic Peninsula is all that is needed to brighten up a gloomy scene (sort of).

This is part of a series of horizon shots.

Recently one of my readers, Angelina Huecommented on the VII version of the series that it reminded her of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s work.

If you too don’t know his work, do an image search for his name and ‘seascapes’.

I had never heard of Sugimoto before, so that was a really great lead for me to see what a great photographer has done with minimal horizon shots.

Also a bit humbling to be reminded, yet again, that it at has all been done before and better.

HVAC Wall

2013-HF-02 (1)

More from the half-frame Olympus Pen, but not paired with other images this time. The subject is, however, visible in an earlier triptych that some of you have seen here. The vent really is pretty big – it ventilates underground parking beneath the View Towers high rise that was shown in another set of images a few days ago. Those are full sized parking stalls marked on the pavement. Usually there are cars parked here so it was a nice surprise to find the parking lot totally empty one Sunday morning.

Drain Sunrise IV

IMG_8320

This is part of the series of storm drain sunrise pictures, looking over the top of the storm drain which you can’t see – you will just have to imagine it. Or go to this post to see it with this same cloud in the background. I don’t know about you, but this cloud looks like it could crush a large ship should one pass beneath it. It kind of looks like it is waiting for such a ship.

View Towers Half-Frame

2013-HF-02 (24)

Another in the recent series of half-frame triptyches, in this case more of a panorama than most of the others. And, the top one is a diptych while the bottom one has the upper image added. I think the diptych works better because of the emphasis on the weird effect at the join between the two exposures, as if there is an opening in the block wall. This was unintentionally emphasised when I changed the exposure for the upper images which I expected to be brighter than the lower one.

However, the lower image gives a better impression of the height of the building, something I have explored in a much earlier post and which was what interested me in this composition. Not to mention the shadows from the balconies, which is the main reason I stopped to take a picture.

Collegial Triptych

2013-HF-02 (36)

Another in the recent series of half-frame triptyches. These are three of my former colleagues – we went out for lunch on one of my last days in the office. It was snowing, and you can see the snow flake streaks.

This was a very poor exposure – horribly underexposed, so there was a lot of recovery time put in with the scanner and then Lightroom. Which made it very gritty and contrasty. I like it for the grittyness, though I would have preferred to get there through more legitimate reasons than blowing my exposure guesstimate.
