A third in a what could be considered a series of storm drain sunrise pictures. This seems the time of year when we occasionally get a magnificent sunrise and since it is more to the south it lines up well with the storm drain in Ross Bay. And, it is not so early that I am still sleeping, oblivious!
This was taken yesterday morning, and really is a nice change to the black and white film series I have been indulging in. I took lots of photos of this scene this morning, and more will show up here in the next while I expect.
Others in this series can be found here, and here – both from about a year ago. I shot brackets and treated them all with HDR processing which I think works well for this kind of shot, even if a bit on the gaudy side. Sunrises are also a bit on the gaudy side, so they are sympathetic.
Another in my incipient series of half-frame triptychs, this one taken in the Chinese Cemetery.
Once again this is a single digital image scanned from three frames on the negative.

Another half-frame photograph from the Olympus Pen. See yesterday’s shot, including the comments, for some of the thinking behind this approach.
This is a single scan of adjacent frames on the negative.
This triptych is shot with film on my half-frame Olympus Pen. The frames are shot to be viewed together, and are scanned from the negatives as a single image. It is a new direction for my photography, and thus a great way to start the new year. Have a good one everybody.
Happy New Year everyone, or rather, happy old year since today I revisit some of my favourite photos from 2013.
I thought about doing the best-of-the-month approach but some months were slim and others had more than one photo I really like, so in the end I chose categories. And because that is not flexible enough, sometimes I show a ‘couple’ (well, ok, a few) photos in a category. I do give category titles below, but they are not mutually exclusive and some photos would easily fit in several. Can you tell I had a hard time choosing? Can you interpret that “category” = “meaningless”?
Anyway, I hope you like some of these too. Click on any image to link to the original post. If I missed something you think should be here, put a link in a comment. I hope you all have a great 2014.
I recommend this blog to my readers. It sprang from a joke and thus is a lot of fun. Melinda only has 3 or 4 other blogs on the go, so I suggest you keep her busy by submitting your own dirt pictures for her consideration (she welcomes submissions). Furthermore, dirt is very broadly defined as you can see here. Thanks Melinda!
From my friend at Burnt Embers comes a photo of burnt dirt, and a broken toy:
Once again I am waiting for a roll of film to be processed. As my regular readers will recall, I picked up for less than the price of a coffee an original Olympus Pen half-frame film camera. The first roll of film I put through as a test is the one above. The second roll is being processed. I am a bit anxious to see what it has to offer – guessing exposures is still not within my comfort zone, and I have tried to use the half frame aspects to deliberately shoot diptych and triptych groupings on the negative, with the idea of scanning them as a single image.
See my About page for details.
