King George Fence

As with my post about an Arbutus tree on King George Terrace this post is on the same road, but at the crest of the hill, and is also taken the same evening, as was these shots of rose hips and an ocean edge hedge. The fence is stained with what looks like the abundantly popular Sikkens yellowish wood stain that is found on many properties in this area, even my own, though it is more expensive than I can really afford. It is too bright for this location and really is a bit of a sore thumb in its fresh state. However, it does work OK in black and white. I like the light on copper post caps, and the parallel curving lines.

The fence is in front of the first property west of Trafalgar Park and can be found near the centre of this map – this property looks over Harling Point towards the Olympic Mountains.

Canon EOS 5DMkii with Canon 50mm/1.4 lens. Shot at f1.4, 1/30th second (handheld, got lucky, again), ISO 1250.

    • Hi David – I realised after posting a couple of fence pictures this week, and other fence photos in the past, and hedges too, that I must have a bit of a thing for them. Also, this week, I realised after the fact that fences are expressive of my mood which is one of being both hemmed in, and fenced out at the same time. Of course, it took the photos to bring this home to me not being the most self aware person in the world.

  1. As usual, love it! Could I ask a favour? How do you get your posts to arrive in a preview format in the emails that your subscribers receive? Mine go out as the full post, your has a short selection and then “Read more of this post”. I’d like to do the same to get more clicks.

    • Hi Photobooth. I don’t know how to control the subscription notice, if there even is a direct way. However, I suspect that what is doing it is the “add more tag” that I insert after the first (or sometimes second) paragraph. This is on the edit toolbar, the icon is next to (right of) the insert/break link icons, at least in my theme that’s how it is set up. I think in some themes it must say something different from “more” since other themes will have different words sometimes, all with the same intent.
The reason I insert it is so that when in my home page you only see the top picture and a bit of text – this reduces the amount of data that has to download when going to my home page for people with slower connections. But, it also encourages people to open a particular post if they like the looks of the first bit – that way I know what people are visiting and can guage interest in different kinds of post.
If you only have one row of icons above your edit window, then there is a way to get the second row to show – I don’t remember how I did that but I think it was an icon on the only row visible when I started out. It may be in my editing preferences somewhere. This is roundabout to saying I am not sure if the “add more tag” has an icon if there is only one row of icons showing.
I hope this helps and that you can make it work in your theme.

    • Paula – I agree about fences, though sometimes you have too look at them the right to find it. This is one of those fences – it is low and unprepossessing and in need of a wash with splashed dirt along the bottom, and patches of green algae growing here and there. The higher contrast monochrome treatment dealt with those problems pretty well.

    • Hi Anne – thanks!. Those tops should darken up nicely over time – they are a shiny copper (metal not paint) with a coating of some kind to keep them shiny, but its only a matter of time before they will start to darken and eventually go green.
