My partner and I have just spent four days in Haida Gwaii attending a potlatch – a friend was being made a chief. The event was terrific – we were honoured to be invited, and so happy to be able to attend and witness this historic event. I don’t know if I will be showing any pictures of the potlatch on this blog; that could get quite complicated. I will however be showing pictures of some of our walks and outings that we took while there. The event was in Old Massett which is at the north end of Graham Island. This is completely the other end of Haida Gwaii from the Kilgii Gwaay site that I featured for much of June and early July on these pages (see this link).

In fact, it is 222 km from here to Kilgii Gwaay, as the raven flies. If you click on this map, it will show you where today’s images come from – near the mouth of the Sangan River, which is just east of Massett on the shore of Dixon Entrance across from the very south end of Alaska. I was entranced by the blue water and sky and the strip of the spit at the mouth of the river. You will see more of these images over the next few days; I took many and have a weakness for them. But, don’t worry, I will try to break them up with some other kinds of scenes, so it won’t get too boring.
