burnt embers

Last year I posted a truly garish picture of snow fencing on Lorne Terrace on Harling Point. It was for a house that was under construction at the time, to protect a tree from machinery. Today’s snow fencing has a more open mesh and is much redder. It was along Quimper Street in the summer, to keep construction workers and their trucks off lawns next to another new house under construction. It seems that the parts of greater Victoria with waterfront or water views are pretty much recession proof as there has been little noticeable slow down in renovations and replacements, at least in the Harling Point area.

I took this picture in August and processed it in Picasa (top image) thinking I might post it. Since today was taken up with making a bed for my youngest and unexpectedly interrupted by taking him for x-rays at the hospital for a sports injury and then late in the day taking my partner to the clinic in a vain attempt to get the tip of her finger reattached after a cooking accident (we keep our knives very sharp) I decided to see what I had waiting in the wings and not prepare something new. In the end, I saw some different things in the photograph than noticed in August, so I reprocessed it in Lightroom (next image) to show better the almost flame like out of focus fencing in the background (which has not come across too well into WP). I wish I had noticed it at the time as an interesting  subject for an abstract photograph all on its own. I also tried some fairly harsh tone-mapping in Photomatix (bottom picture) to emphasize the brightest part of the fencing.

At least today’s snow fencing won’t make your eyes nearly as sore as last year’s shot did.  I don’t really have a favourite among these three shots, possibly the last one that has been reduced to mostly parallel lines.
