Red King

Fall colours seem obligatory in the blogosphere, and our King apple tree has been very obliging this year with apples redder than usual.

They are big too – up to 12″ (30 cm) diameter. The King is a versatile apple, they have a heavy wax coating naturally, keep well into January in a cold room (the small ones keep longer than the big ones), they are good for eating fresh, but we mostly make apple sauce, apple juice and dried apple and put aside a couple of boxes to use during the fall and early winter.     • Hi Laurie. Our Kings are usually not very red either, this summer was so hot and dry that they are quite different than usual.
      We do get some watercore with them (though until now I did not have a name to put to the phenomenon). I think that is more the case with the bigger apples on the tree, which may be why they don’t last nearly as well as the small ones. It is our only apple so I can’t compare to see if other varieties in this area also have it – though I could ask my neighbours who have several trees.

    • Thanks so much Ken. I can probably put some of the inspiration for these shots firmly at your feet – the detail shots you take of bark, and also the closeups of colours in vintage cars stick in my mind and these are sort of a melding of those two themes.
