Storm Drain D
This storm drain is well known to my frequent visitors and thus it appears again today, a numerically important day if you are round-minded (is that the word for someone inclined to rounding numbers?). I have decided to skip the numbering from Storm Drain III to Storm Drain D. I may go back and infill the missing 496 (CDXCVI?) for no other reason than Roman numerals are a lot simpler at the lower end of the scale). As it happens 496 is a “perfect number” and apparently important to string theory as well. So, why is it important to skip it?
Because this is my 500th (Dth) post and I thought the storm drain was the best subject for such an auspicious number. Circumstances collided such that I took these yesterday after sunset, handheld when it was too dark to be safely doing so and thus with very high ISO values. It had occurred to me, too late, that I really should post a storm drain picture or three, and the tripod was not in the car.

Wow, Ehpem, your camera has great low-light/high ISO capabilities. These shots would not even be useable from my camera, yours are terrific. Congrats on the 500 mark, it’s been a real joy from this end to follow along.

Thank you Toad. It is very good in low light, though there was lots of noise and these really needed a b&w treatment to get the most out of them. 500 seems like a lot. I must be coming up to my 500th day in a row about now since I have a few days with two posts. It has been a lot of fun, and really a lot of work too.

Thank you Ken. That is exactly what I thought. I am glad I got useable shots, even if a bit different from my usual.

I love the tone of these shots. Congratulations on reaching number 500 – also good to see your lovely amber-like macro as the header. It works a treat!

Thank you Mike. I was unsure about that header, I tried it out for just one post but it seems to be sticking around! The tone comes partly from too little light, but also from the filtering. It is a feature of Lightroom I am still learning, but I very much like how one can choose a colour filter and then adjust it with the colour bars to change the emphasis of different parts – at the moment it is all by feel, when I slide a bar I have little or no idea what the effect is going to be.

Congratulations two days in a row, this time for the 500th post! Hope I can keep up the energy to get to that milestone myself one day. Very well done and the best thing is your posts are such high quality ones.

Hi Katherine – thanks for the congratulations. I am hoping you can too – and I would think that you are well on the way between your two blogs. Certainly the material is out there – how many million or billions of old photos are there to choose from?
