I Saw an Old Lady Swallow a Fly

IMG_4934-Edit

This spider was living on the basket ball hoop earlier this summer. You can tell our son had moved out, as the spiders have taken over. I surprised her swallowing fly-innards soup. I think it’s a fly, it might well be a wasp though.

So, this is another anniversary of sorts. Two years ago today I started blogging daily. It was not a plan, it is not a plan now either. It just happened, and it just continued. Last year on this date I gave my self permission to not post daily, but never took up the offer. This year I repeat the offer, and think it might be more likely that my posting frequency will drop since I will be starting a different job. I expect that to be quite disruptive to my personal time now and then. We will see. It is too much fun doing this, and interacting with my great community of readers, for me to just slip away and forget you all, so I don’t think that is likely to happen, and besides I am not giving myself permission to do that.

See you all tomorrow!

    • Hi Paula! Thank you. I like how the background is brown, and so is the spider – that worked out well, though not planned at the time (a dark background was planned, but I did not really notice the colour too).

  2. Ooo hooo, creepy crawlies. I actually watched a very dramatic spider and fly scene the other day from the comfort of my bed. It was happening outside my window and the way the light was shining through the curtains made the shadows humungous, several times bigger than the spider and fly actually were. A crane fly was going along the windowsill when it met a spider web. From the other side of the window I saw the spider come out, and run down the web. I was going “Nooooo, ruuuuun!!” from the bed but to no avail… the spider caught the fly and a epic struggle ensued for many minutes. Eventually the crane fly was overcome. I was actually a bit alarmed.

    • Ha! That is cool. Projected shadows can be quite unnerving. A few decades ago I watched, and photographed an epic struggle between a bumble bee and a black widow spider in the Okanagan. I was glad to have extension tubes on my 200mm lens – it meant I did not need to get too close. That struggle lasted about half an hour, and the black widow won.

    • If they do, then I am sure that I can work something out. It might just have to be billable time, that’s all! Do you think they would pay for my posts?
Okay, not need to answer that question.

  3. I like the detail in the spider, it looks so vicious. My wife thinks spiders are vicious anyway but that’s life in the insect world.
I have attempted to post “twice weekly” but sometimes it doesn’t work out. I’m pretty relaxed about scheduling posts, a detriment of retirement (retirees can be very unreliable due to unprecedented amount of freedom). And when your readership is as small as mine there is little pressure to change.

    • This spider was very large, so detail was kind of staring my macro in the lens, so to speak. And they are vicious, in human terms anyway.
Have you retired? That is something that I had not realised. I can’t afford to retire yet, but changing jobs is supposed to make that possible sooner. We will see.
As to blogging, if I were more organised, I could probably keep the daily part going if I was a week or two ahead on posts. But I do them the night before, unless I know I will be away for a week or something. Just one bad flu could break the string

      • I’m retired but I haven’t stopped working. My job at the Museum is on a volunteer basis and it’s the best job I’ve ever had. It’s not full time but it’s an activity I enjoy and I feel that they really appreciate it. Working with creative people is very different than working with scientists.

      • The museum here is swarming with ‘retired’ people who are there for the same reasons you are, and whose contributions are very much appreciated. It is a very good way to fill some of your ‘spare’ time. And makes a contribution to society as well!

    • Hi Patrick. Well, it is a tad premature to say I *have* a new job. But I have given notice at the old one, and I have several options I am considering at the moment. I will say more on FB when things have firmed up, in the next week or two is the most likely.
