Blowball
The same time that I took yesterday’s spider pictures, I also took these shots of a dandelion seed head, also known by some as a blowball, clockflower, devil’s milk-pail and even piss-en-lit. There are many other names for dandelions, and you can amuse yourself by reading this source if you want to delve deeper.
I was thinking only of the back light and how to shoot these lovely glowing globes on my lawn while the sun was setting a few weeks ago. The names are a recent discovery.

I have never heard any of the expressions ( blowball, clockflower, devil’s milk-pail and even piss-en-lit) you mentioned. I should get out more often.

That link must have 30 different names for this plant. And in other languages there must be dozens more of these kinds of names too. It is actually a really interesting feature of dandelions – most plants only have two or three or maybe a half dozen regional variants, not dozens. I think that must speak to it ubiquity around the world, and a variety of uses, and games, it has. It would be interesting to go through plant names classifying them according to their frequency of names, and their uses to see if there is a correlation. Any students out there needing a project? It sounds like a lot of work.
