Last friday my work took me on a helicopter ride well up the valley at the head of the Toba Inlet. I could not resist a few diagonal shots.

I was trying to photograph the white edge of the tidal zone. I think the top picture represents that best, but I like all these.

What an interesting view of Toba! (and certainly one I haven’t seen before).

Hi Laurie – I had never been there before by any mode of transport so it was a delight to do so, especially on a sunny day (everywhere else was fog bound). I was very surprised at the vessel that we came across moored at the head of the inlet. Perhaps you know what it is, but if not, then you will have to wait for another post on another day!

No, I haven’t been very far up Toba so haven’t seen it. Now you’ve got my curiosity piqued. A few summers back I saw a tug heading up Toba, towing a barge with huge pipes on it – we figured these were destined for a run-of-river project up there. So I’m wondering if it might be something like that….

Great photos showing the steep, stark, barren bottom slopes of those endless coastal inlets.

I am not sure about stark, but they are formidable places by boat and usually impossible on foot.

Stark: grim, desolate, “a stark landscape” (Collins English Dictionary). That seems to describe your photos well.

Well, Toba Inlet is part of Desolation Sound so I will have to give you the stark after all!

I am thinking that the Research Director of One Day | One Image is in a good bargaining position right now.
But as I said, two empty seats first leg, you could get as far as logging camp and then cool your jets while we continued up into the mountains. If there is a next time, which seems highly unlikely.
