A Lie on the Land

My mother might call this photo A Likely Story; another title could be The Lies That Shadows Tell.
The owner of the shadow on the left is well-known to me, for more than 30 years. There is not one thing about her that resembles this shadow. Except perhaps icefloe-cold feet in the bed.
I am sure there is a cautionary tale in here; perhaps for the users of photographic evidence in court, or those that dream for UFOs. Even perhaps for those seeking their inner penguin.

Oh, I like this. I think one of the reasons that I like silhouettes is that most often there is distortion. And aye, strange is good. 🙂

Just the right kind of strange in this one. Thanks for the comment!

Inner penguin – that made me laugh. The ice-floe cold feet I can relate too, unfortunately.

Thanks Karen – it is pleasing to start someone’s day with a smile, even if they have cold feet.

Had I not read the story I would have thought the image was surreal and dreamlike. I guess it still is!

Hi Howard and thanks for commenting. It guess it still is too! Seems that way to me, and I was there and have the memory laid over the image, but still find it odd.

I love the subtle element of humour in this image, that you were able to ‘see’ first and then describe so touchingly. Many would not have ‘seen’ this at all. The bizarre contortions to shadows, the twisting of the truth. It is so unusual, a touch of the surreal, a personal observation, and a moment of fun – all intertwined.

Hi Andy – thanks for your thoughtful comment – I am pleased you like this post! “Twisting of the truth” is the bit that caught my eye right away, and it is a humorous twist at that.
Part of the effect arises, I think, because the people are walking up quite a steep hill just after a dip and I was shooting from above on the other side of the dip. Rotating the image probably adds quite a bit to the surreal effect.

This is certianly one of the strangest photos that you have posted. Wonderfully strange.

Thanks Ken! Strange is good :). This really is what I saw in the photo – it is cropped, rotated and converted to black and white – but I did not do anything else to make it look this way.
