Finger Light
I had my Olympus XA point and shoot primed and ready for a shot as I walked down the street.
Holding it cupped in my hand I accidentally fired the shutter.
This then is the view of the inside of my cupped hand, out between my nearly closed fingers.
I find it somehow reminiscent of those ubiquitous desert slot canyon photos.

A very happy accident indeed. Very good abstract with light and shade, texture and a cue to peer at it for a long while… everything you want, in short.

Why thank you Melinda. I think I would like to visit one of those places sometime, just because of their sheer beauty.
But the photos are, sadly, firmly fixed in the panoply of American cliché so there seems little utility in taking them. Other than learning how to take pictures in a place like that.

I’d like to see a slot canyon, too, but I feel like every possible photo has already been taken. And every one of them looks (to me, anyway) like the same stock photo.
The photo school I went to earlier this summer had a large print of a slot canyon photo in one of the classrooms. Maybe it was there to be ironic.

Thanks David. I am glad I am not the only one seeing things around here! I bet there are a few canyon shot misfires that are like this too – you know, when the tripod gets jogged, or the shutter pressed while lifting the camera, etc. For some reason I have not seen any published though. Maybe that is not the reason people haul all that gear, not to mention their selves, to those difficult places.

Hi Ken. I had that same thought but they did not work out like I wanted via LR5 conversions. Your comment prompted another try, this time with TopazB&WEffects, to better effect. Here are a couple of conversions – one retaining a diffused colour, the other purely black and white.

I probably should have framed it as one of my ongoing experiments in motion photography, or some such fiction. But I actually like these stories of accidents as much as I like their results. I suppose I can take credit for recognising some potential in the negative…

I think I prefer the diffused colour version of all three. It has that touch of flame in the upper left which attracted me to the shot in the first place.
