Another shot from the Coho Ferry, taken on my trip to the Olympic Peninsula in July.
I am of two minds about whether is shot is better in black and white, or red and white. They each have merit.

More photos from the Coho Ferry, taken on the way to Port Angeles and the Olympic Peninsula in July.
The Coho is a venerable old lady, having served this route for more than 50 years. She keeps on going, and provides a terrific service for the south end of Vancouver Island. This is the quickest way to get to the Olympic Penisusla and places south, like Oregon and Washington. And brings a lot of tourists to downtown Victoria.
Thanks to everyone that voted for my photograph. I find it amazing to be voted the winner when there were so many excellent photographs in the shortlist.
We are pleased to announce the winner of the 5th Digital Lightroom competition on the theme of Lead In Lines. As ever, the standard was high and it was difficult for the judges to come up with a shortlist of 10 pictures and I’m sure much harder for you to choose just one. When the judging is done, the majority of the judges do not know the names of the photographers, only one member of the DLR team does.
The winner of the 5th Digital Lightroom competition is:

This treatment captures for me some of the feeling of approaching the Olympic Mountains from water when they are just a strip along the horizon, topped with clouds, underlined by fog.

I made these photos on the Coho Ferry on the way to Port Angeles and the Olympic Peninsula in July.
The only difference here is the point of focus, and slightly different processing.

I initially prepared this image for the Lead-in Lines competition at The Digital Lightroom which is a WordPress blog. In the end I did not submit this photo as I thought it not really what they have in mind. If anyone has a contrary opinion I would be interested to hear it. That competition is still open for voting, probably until Friday, and one of my other photos has been short-listed – go check it out and vote.
I like the trans-Atlantic difference in terminology between lead-in and leading. They are both descriptive and yet quite different, when one thinks about it. And having that difference makes me think about it which is another point in favour of the variety (and of most differences, when it comes down to it).

The same time that I took yesterday’s spider pictures, I also took these shots of a dandelion seed head, also known by some as a blowball, clockflower, devil’s milk-pail and even piss-en-lit. There are many other names for dandelions, and you can amuse yourself by reading this source if you want to delve deeper.
I was thinking only of the back light and how to shoot these lovely glowing globes on my lawn while the sun was setting a few weeks ago. The names are a recent discovery.
