In Passing

IMG_4761

In the comments sometime in a week or two ago, this scene was mentioned as something that I did not photograph. It is a seasonal event arising when the sun comes up in exactly the right place and casts my head shadow on the computer box. Bed hair and all. Since I saw this again just after that discussion (which I can’t find right now or I’d link to it) I was inspired to photograph it.

Unknown Blossom II

IMG_2031-Edit

Another flower from my visit to Royal Roads University gardens last month – this too is in the lower end of the gardens where it is very shady. It was windy so I had to raise the ISO to get a decent shutter speed. And Mr. Toad, of Toadhollow Photography very kindly acted as assistant and held the stem of the blossom steady as it was swaying so much.

Shadow Cat

IMG_4752

A while ago I introduced you to Cat Number Two who adopted us this summer. She is very shy, and it is hard to get close to her, especially with a large camera. Thus, these shots are with a 100mm lens from the other side of the room, in lower light conditions. And heavily cropped, as you can tell. Even for all their flaws, I really like the idea of the cat’s shadow on the floor. We don’t need the cat to know what this is all about.

Cat Number One is still rather unhappy, but they are developing a tolerance of each other. They still play some games at the cat door, blocking each other’s use of it in one direction or the other, batting with paws and hissing if one comes through at the wrong time. And there are occasional vocal complaints punctuated with hisses. But they can sit in the same room now, in a mostly relaxed way if neither is moving. Alert, but putting on blasé.

Gathering of Pollen

IMG_4490

A few days ago I posted Poppy Silhouette, a series of shots showing the shadows cast by bees gathering poppy pollen, including an animated gif. These 7 macro photographs are of the same flower shot a few minutes later than the others but from the other side of the poppy. It really shows how much difference lighting makes to a subject.

I like them both angles, but I think I prefer the silhouette shots because they are a more unusual perspective, and impart much of the same information.

Deer Fence VII

IMG_4657

A few of you may be relieved to know these peas are the last of my posts showing deer mesh. (Unless I take some more pictures of it). And, I do have more pictures from inside the fenced off areas, which I expect you will see.

The deer love the peas (so do the humans) and go to a lot of trouble to pull them through the mesh, or out from under the edges. They did manage to get their heads under the mesh a few days after I took these pictures and made a feast for themselves, which sadly left little more for people.

Deer Fence VI

IMG_4639

The penultimate deer mesh post. This group is all about the light in patches of dew on the nasturtium leaves. A top-down view of a similar setting was in yesterday’s post. All of these shots are very similar, and yet they each have their own interesting differences in the details. I could not choose between them (though I think I like the first one the best, at the time of writing), so I just threw a bunch in. Hope you don’t mind! (There are quite a few others so, really, I am showing some restraint!)
