Red Crow Toes

Today, my wife and I decided to go out for milk, and ended up, after getting cold while I stopped to take some pictures, at Ottavios on Oak Bay Avenue. Ottavio Italian Bakery and Delicatesen has a terrific selection of cheeses, baked goods, coffee and red umbrellas. I am a frequent customer, but never before with my camera. I managed to publish today’s post yesterday, for about the 4th time in the past month [note to self – never press publish when feeling rushed], so I was looking around for a simple subject without the need for a lot of writing to fill today’s gap. Red umbrellas and crow toes seem well suited to that purpose.

  2. Okay, the second photo just ROCKS! Birds and I don’t get along, they just won’t let me photograph them for some odd reason so I always appreciate any bird image especially those with such character!

    • Thanks so much David – those crow toes are really very nice. I am not sure I would characterise these as “bird” photos in the way that I imagine you have trouble capturing them – crows or house sparrows on cafe patios, pigeons in a public park, these are pretty easy to get a picture of, unlike birds in the wild which avoid my few attempts to photograph them as well. Actually, the gear is a problem too – huge pieces of glass to bring them close enough just are not going to happen in my lifetime.

    • Hi Aware (or is it Void – never sure what the blogging rules are for shortening a handle, I think on balance it is preferable to have an Aware commenting on my pictures, than a Void). I am very pleased to have a new commentator on my blog, especially one that likes the same things I do. Please feel free to come back any time.

      • Brendan it is then. Its not the first time milk has ended up as photos. My very first blog photo is another such instance, as are many of my Ross Bay Cemetery photos – located between my home and the grocery.

    • hi ken – glad you like it. Normally I am not a huge fan of crows, they get into other bird’s and people’s business all the time. But, this one was pretty funny trying to lift off the top air vent flaps of the umbrella – must have thought there was food to be found.

    • Thanks so much Karen. The second image (the one with crow toes hanging down) was a bit of a disappointment at first because as I was getting ready to take the shot, the crow looked under the edge and that would have made a great picture, instead he flew off just after I got this shot. But, I like the toes hanging over the edge too and in the end am satisfied.
