Viburnum December
This week’s posts have been covering my weekend search for some colour under the bland and dreary December skies. This post takes us away from the patio in earlier posts to the front garden. These flowers are on the Viburnum (probably V. tinus) bush in our front raised bed. It is still/already in flower, and has many more buds waiting for a bit of encouragement to pop into view. The flowers are very small, but they occur in tight clusters the size of my hand and as a whole make their presence known, even without exposure to macro-wielding papparazzi pushing lenses in their faces.

Close up shots all taken with SMC Takumar 100mm f4.0 macro screw mount (m42) lens on a Canon EOS 5D MkII. The light was very poor and the tripod was AWOL, so I had to use ISO 2000, usually at f4.0 and f5.6 with shutter speeds in the 1/125th to 1/250th range though some slower, some faster. Most of these pictures are lightly heavily cropped.

These are out of the world shots!!

Thankyou Robin, nice to know that older posts can stay alive for a while with people looking at them. Sometimes I wonder if they might as well be deleted after 48 hours 🙂

How did I miss these the first time around? Somebody at your place has a green thumb and you’re pretty good with that Canon. A great combination.

Hi Ken – the garden is a bit of a cooperative effort, though these days my involvement seems to be limited to the hacking and wacking end of things – pruning and heavier jobs. My daughter has been helping a lot in the garden lately, and definitely has a green thumb. So does my wife who does many of the lighter jobs. The sons usually take care of the lawn.

Hi obrien – I like that one too with the shape of the flower cluster out of focus in the background, and the top of a cluster in front – an echo/shadow effect that works pretty well.

I love your macro work! GREAT set of shots here. Love the colors and tones of the flower, this is a much needed and well received break from the grey we seem to be surrounded by lately. Right on time for Christmas! Awesome post, my friend.

Hey Toad – thanks for your compliments 🙂 I really like taking macro pictures, they let me look at the small things more closely than my eyes will allow these days. And, once again, thank you very much for including this post, and others!, in your weekly round up of photographs that you really like. 🙂 It is very rewarding for me to be considered so highly by you. And it brings new viewers to my blog which I really love.
Everyone that has come that way this week – welcome and please look around and stick around if you feel so inclined. 🙂

Meanderer, I just absorbed that your Winter Brights series is just the same idea as I have been playing with this week. Very nice to see a slightly different approach to the same need to overcome overcast skies.

Hi Danita, its interesting how much colour there is out there, if one looks for it. EDIT: and I have just been noticing how some gravatars, like yours, go some way to brightening up the black and gray theme that I am using, which is like the small drops of colour in the garden at the moment.
