Sunrising Rock

What better way to begin the new year than with a sunrise? This picture was taken at 8:30am on December 31st. I was out early trying to get more long exposures of the ocean and this is near the end of useful light.

There was a bit of swell left over from the previous evening’s storm which was moving the water just enough to blend individual waves into a fog. This vantage point is the south east corner of Harling Point, looking at Trial Island, with the eastern extent of the Olympic Mountains on the right and hints of the coastal mountains in the distance.

    • Thanks! I am pleased by it too. I took several, but only this one had really interesting motion in the water. An element of luck involved with a 2 second delay in the shutter and then a multiple second exposure – you can see a wave moving along the shore and time the exposure for the wave being at various levels, but what size the wave, and the one before and after and so on – lots of unknowns which make it interesting.

    • Thanks composer – I am going to be taking more moving water pictures – they are very satisfying they way they change the quality of the water. Or maybe that should be, the way they depict the quality of the water.

    • Hi ray – this was just a brief moment around sunrise, then it all was cloudy. Today on the other hand was spectacular, with terrific views of the Olympic Mountains and some very cool clouds to go with it – unfortunately I was not able to take pictures of those so will have to rely on my memory I guess.

  15. This beautiful photo has a dual personality. View just the lower half and see a lone boulder creating an eddy of turbulent water. View just the upper half and see a calm sea with a new day adawning. One or the other could stand alone!

    • Hi Barb – Happy New Year!. The way you put it is in many ways what the ocean is for me – a beautiful gentle thing that can be wildly turbulent and very dangerous. Usually the two don’t occur together. In this instance, the calm water in the distance looks that way in part because of the long exposure smoothing out the whole surface.

    • I like that too – these partially submerged rocks with bits on them that don’t go under any of the waves provide such a nice hard surface to go with the softened bits that are occasionally drowned, or sometimes exposed in the bottom of a trough.
