Ross Bay Lost
This is in a series taken in Ross Bay last Friday, including a kayak photo and a storm drain, both of which have these same interesting clouds. Frequent viewers will have noticed that I normally keep people out of my photos. However, this woman’s white coat was perfect for the conditions. And, the entire time I was at this part of the beach she was searching among the pebbles, usually crouching close to the beach, and generally getting into my photos.
I had the feeling she was doing more than beach combing for nice rocks, but was somehow meditating and contemplating while doing so, as if mulling over or searching for something dear that was lost, perhaps irretrievably. Perhaps lost love.
Higher up the beach and a bit further along was a log with some matching pebbles placed on it, and next to it a paper coffee cup printed with a heart and the word ‘love‘ – probably Valentine’s Day merchandising from a coffee store chain. I did not get a shot of that, much to my subsequent regret, because as I was leaving I saw this woman go back to that spot and add some rocks to her collection.
When I read about the Valentine’s Day contest in The Background Story (one of my favourite blogs) I was inspired to find some brief words to go with one of the photos in which this woman appears. Contests are not normally my kind of thing, but the timing was good so I gave it a shot – my first ever contest entry (and I ended up submitting another one too).
As I schedule this post for publication, I have no idea how the contest went, or if my submission will be shown. But, I was going to use this picture sometime, and by association with my contest entry it has a bit of Valentine’s Day in it. I think all of us could do with a touch of Valentine’s Day, every day.
EDIT: my entry based on this series of shots was chosen as a runner up. The other one I submitted was chosen as the winner 🙂

Hi David – thank you very much. As can been seen in the earlier post of the storm drain the colours were very muted anyway, so b&w seems a good fit.

If you see her again, better not ask her if she was looking for fragments of her love to skip like beach worn agates across the surface of her lover’s cold heart. She was probably just looking for a coupon for a free latte at Starbucks she had dropped somewhere.

Hi Valerie – I agree, it would be very wise to not ask that kind of question. I might ask, carefully, if she had lost a screw because I found one embedded in my tire just after this – clearly someone lost it and I most certainly found it. And I could have bought 10 lattes for the cost of finding it.

The photo is a winner whether it’s chosen or not. It’s a great composition and the lighting is really nice. And it looks smashing in black and white.

Hi Ken – thank you very much. The scene was made for b&w. It was a different one that I chose for my submission which emphasised the number of pebbles on the beach. My other submission came first, and the one of this woman came in the top five runners up 🙂
