Silk Macro

This time the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x macro lens was brought to bear on a small spool of silk thread, a recent present from my mother, but probably very old.  The word ‘size’ on the spool is 4mm across and in the shot below is at or near to maximum magnification (5:1) as are the thread close-ups, while the picture above is around 1:1 magnification. The other end of the spool, which I did not photograph, is stamped “PURE SILK THREAD 50 YDS SHADE 2300”

Macro Salt Shaker is the first in this series and explains more about this lens. None of these images are cropped or sharpened. Some have contrast, brightness or fill light adjustments, in small amounts. The thread shots have a tiny bit of saturation added.

  1. So cool. I feel like a little mouse looking at these pictures. Ehpem you shrunk the audience!

I love the Size picture – especially the tiny little fiber coming from the center of the spool. I will seriously never grow bored of these macro shots.

  2. The first two shots show off the amazing range of this lens, as well as the sharpness. I was photographing some Indian silver jewelry today (at the Museum) and I could have used this lens to show some of the delicate engravings on them.

    • Hi Ken. Those first two shots also illustrate, by comparison to the others, the difficulty of lighting. The others could be so much better with the right light. I took some pictures of a little silver box and some beads which I was planning to post. But we had a huge power outage here this afternoon and my computer is not working – I fear that the (nearly new) power supply is toast. So, not having access to the images I maybe running a barebones blog for a couple of days…

  3. Wow, my friend, I think I need 20 stitches from cutting myself on your shots here today, they are so razor sharp! I just love this level of intricate detail. That lens is just so very amazing!! Great photographs, really well presented.

    • Hope you got some painkiller to go with those stitches Toad. The optics of that lens are something special. I did the focussing in magnified live view mode, which really helps with getting it just right.
