Processed Cabbage

My weekend visit to Friday Harbor included a visit to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday. Friday Harbor is the county seat for the San Juan Islands in Washington State and as such is the largest community in the islands, though pretty small. It has a great market for fresh produce, crafts and other typical market products including good live music. I only took one picture at the market, and this is it, run through slightly different post-processing. I spotted this cabbage while waiting to pay for some flowers for my parents who I was visiting. The top image is a simple black and white conversion from the colour image below.

This colour image was tweaked by upping the contrast pretty heavily and a minor crop.

.

The monochrome version below was a Picasa accident – sometimes if I do a filtered black and white conversion, with a heavy colour filter, when I save I get a super contrasty, usually nearly black image, like the one below. After I muttered a few curses, I looked more closely and decided to keep this version as it has some merit, to my eyes.

My computer is in the shop again, so I might be slow in responding to comments.

  1. I can’t count the number of cabbage photos I have taken through the years. It’s just a photogenic vegetable. I also had a very long fling with high contrast b&w but I have not done it in a long time. But I like these. if I could be critical for a bit – i would go a step farther on the last photo to eliminate more gray tones, especially in the top half of the photo where the white part is a little gray. i think it would have a more graphic quality.

    • Hi Ken, I am oftened reminded that I am following in footsteps of others but this is my first ever (and only) cabbage shot – I probably have seen others’, but don’t recollect them.
I don’t find your comment critical – it is welcome. I did try to crank it up a bit, but lost some of the nice spidery lines so left it as it is. But I agree it would be even more graphic, which is what is nice about this version of the photo.

    • Thanks David! If you are there on a Saturday morning then the market will be open for you. There are so many interesting things to see on the island, it’s a beautiful place.

    • I am a bit torn on this one – I like the colours in that one, and I think it emphasizes that bit of light in the upper right corner in a way that the first image does not, and the last one wipes out entirely.
