Log Rot
These photographs are details of a rotting log in San Juan County Park on the west side of San Juan Island. You can see more of the log in my post about picnic tables.
I was drawn to the textures of this wood – the top photos works best for me in colour, while the bottom is far better in black and white – it had less colour in the log- pretty much all grey anyway.

Canon 5Dii, Nikkor-N 24mm/f2.8 lens, ISO 100, ~f3.5, 1/200th top and 1/40th bottom.
This post was scheduled in advance as I am out of town and completely off grid for the first two weeks of June. Naturally I won’t be answering any comments until I get back – but please, don’t hesitate to comment, I will do my best to respond when I can.

Hi David 🙂 I like the top one best too, now that i have been away from it for a while. It was interesting to see how the log had weathered differently on the side facing the ocean (top) from the side facing inland (bottom)

Hi ashkitty – I found your post, lots of rotting wood! It is an interesting subject. I was just excavating well preserved wood that is 10,700 years old and it has many of the same textures and features of these logs.

Hi Danita – I had a great time. And it is SO off the grid. 90km by boat or sea plane from the end of the road, satellite phone for safety but not otherwise for phoning home.
