Seaside Fence II

In the winter I posted about a fence that is between the bedrock end of the Chinese Cemetery and the first private property towards Pebble Beach. The fence blew down later in the winter – today’s photos date from before that storm.

The extremely shallow depth of field on these images was intriguing at the time, but I was not able to find a way to present them that I liked. However, a black and white conversion and a bit of added contrast makes them more interesting to my eye, while retaining their abstract qualities.

    • Thanks Ryan – makes me want to try again sometime, moving the focus point closer (or further). Except the fence blew down and I don’t know if the cable and the posts it was attached to are still standing. It’s only 5 minutes from here, so I suppose I could go look!

  4. i love the very shallow dof but i’m trying to figure out how it was done. I’m stumped. Even at f1.4 on a 50mm should give you more depth. Is there a filter involved or some post processing trick?
    Oh, and the first is my favorite.

    • Hi Ken – no tricks or filters. I think it is a combination of the dof and the pov and possible the distance from the camera that I was focusing – pretty much looking along the length of the cable with only a narrow slice ending up in focus. This photo linked below has a very narrow slice that is in focus with this lens when looking along a subject, and I think that effect is accentuated by the slice intersecting at right angles another “slice”, in this case the cable.
