Trial Island Sunrise

Trial Island Sunrise

This shot of the sunrise behind Trial Island is from my archive and I really can’t explain why I have not posted it before – and maybe I have but I can’t find it if I did.

It was taken on the last day of 2011, on the same shoot as several of my all time favourite shots, including Sunrising Rock II and Ocean Post SunriseSunrising Rock is also from this same morning. It was one of those mornings were absolutely everything lined up perfectly.

Canon EOS 5D MkII, Canon 50mm f1.4 lens, ISO100, F22, 4 seconds, polarizing filter.

  1. Oh Wow! What a tremendous sight. I’m working backwards today so I’ve just seen the ‘tomorrow’ shot (if you understand my meaning!), but haven’t commented on it yet. Amazing how a few minutes can alter a scene entirely. The comments above hint at the problems we face with images like this – what to leave in, how wide do you go: left, right, up, down? Sometimes the sky is so vast and the colour so widespread that one just doesn’t know where to stop. I do wonder whether a vertical shot would have given more height to the sky, but I like the balance between sky and sea in this shot which is well balanced – it leave me wanting more.

    • Thanks Andy. I was so focussed on getting long exposures to work that I did not think much about framing, and indeed my “tomorrow” shot shows that what was what it was all about. I could of course crop this photo to emphasize the sky, but I would not capture more of it that way. Thank goodness the colour pretty much carries the day anyway!

  3. Beautiful! I, too, love the clouds and the texture they impart to the shot. I also really like how the dark island echoes the shape of the lighter island further in the background. Lovely!

By the way, do you mind if I put up a post on my blog linking to yours so I can share your work……I won’t copy any photos, just send some readers your way?

    • Hi Howard. Thanks for you comment. Just so you know, the lighter stuff in the background is probably the Cascade mountains in western Washington, just north of this view is Mt. Baker, and at the south end of this view is more or less where Seattle is, 70 miles away though. The furthest right hill is the eastern edge of the Olympic Mountains, probably in the area of Sequim or Pt. Townsend. I agree that Trial Island echos the background nicely, I have often found that when pointing my camera in this general direction.
Absolutely no problem about linking, that would be wonderful. New readers always welcome. I have been enjoying dipping into your blog a bit here and there – I have not had any spare time in the past couple of weeks, but really want to have a good look as I have seen a lot of interesting photography so far.

      • I am going to put a link to your blog in my blog post tomorrow. Would you like me to just use your name as ‘ehpem’ and if you would like I will put a low res black and white image of yours up as an example with a copyright attribution to you….otherwise will just post it a s a link. Sorry, I didn’t know any way to contact you except as a comment. You can delete it and email me if you like.

      • Hi Howard, my email address is lurking on my about page or somewhere. You can embed one of my images if you want in a way that links back to my blog if it is clicked on. I have no trouble with that, it would be a pleasure to be found amongst your excellent images.
If you want to contact me off-blog then its ehpemm-aat-gmail.com. Ehpem for attribution is fine, or burntembers.com which leads here too.

  4. David is right – FANTASTIC is the right word. But to have this sit on your hard drive for almost a year without sharing is unconscionable. I will let it slide this time but let’s try not to have this happen again. 😉

    • Aw geez guys, I am sorry to have suppressed (ie lost) this one for so long. Another reason to get my indexing going properly. I like your idea of a portfolio tag in LR4, will have to start doing that. I should probably also have a tag for ones that I have put up on this blog so I can be certain if I have used it before. Glad you like it 🙂

  5. What a fantastic shot! Personally, I would prefer to see more of the clouds than sea…but then again, I am a cloud person! Yes, cloud person. 😛 By all means, it doesn’t take anything “away” from the shot, just my preference. Okay, thought I was done, just took another look and wow, what amazing colours!

    • Thanks David. This was part of my early experiments at getting a nice soft water surface so I was thinking water rather than clouds – not paying enough attention to the whole perhaps. I think you are right – probably this shot could lose a bit off the bottom edge.
