Wicked Red
Another picture from over the holidays. One of the gifts I received was old Nikon film bodies and lenses. I took this picture at the dinner table shortly after opening the present using the adapter from the 24mm Nikkor lens that I always carry in my camera bag on a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5 lens just to see if it would work, and it did, very well.
I actually quite like this shot. And even though my son thought I was taking a picture of him and made a face. It did not matter since it looks like he has just blown the candle out. His red and black shirt makes the shot much more interesting, and I like the graininess from the high ISO setting.
I got distracted by the bellows photography over the holidays as the adapter for that set up arrived at about the same time as I got these cameras. Thus I have not yet played around with the new old Nikons very much, but will be doing so over the coming weeks, trying out the lenses and so on. It is tempting to run a few rolls of film through the cameras as well. And, some of the lenses are Nikkor zooms from the early 80s. I am interested to see how they might work for video as all my other lenses are primes.
I suddenly have a few more macro lenses than I really need. They are all bought used, received for no cost at all, or recycled from my own 1970’s and 80’s Pentax gear. The Canon FD 50mm f3.5 will live with the bellows unit and it’s extension tubes, the SMC Takumar 100mm/f4 has terrific bokeh of a certain type, and is also a good medium length manual lens for video, the Canon 100mm/f2.8 macro is the only 1:1 magnification lens I have, and it has autofocus, so it is my go-to macro for most things. But, this Nikkor has such great optics, and a different kind of nice bokeh and is also a better focal length for general use than 100mm, so I expect it will see quite a bit of use.

This is absolutely terrific, Ehpem! Love the delicate bokeh!

Thanks Toad! Delicate is a very good word for it.

Hi Ken – they are a very common used item, there are a couple of dozen of them on the bay at the moment. This one looks like it is from 1979 based on the serial number. Good luck finding a good one for a good price!

I had wanted the 55mm Micro Nikkor for a very long time and I still don’t have one. I had used the lens on many occasions and I’m familiar with the sharpness and convenience it has to offer. A co-worker at the Museum has a 25 year old one and it works fine on his D5100. I should look into finding a good used one now. You’ve given me an idea! By the way, i have a shirt just like the one your son has.
