Miramontes Paddleboard
These paddleboarders are a follow-up to an earlier post, Miramontes, in which I mentioned that standup paddleboarders came by while we were on our New Year’s day walk.
This picture features some of those paddlers. It is an interesting sport, though not one I expect to be participating in. One ad for paddleboards that I looked at asserts that it’s almost like walking on water. I think that comment might explain a lot about the zealotry of doing this on a freezing cold winter’s day, with a serious risk of hypothermia if you fall into the water.

Canon EOS 5Dmkii, Nikkor-N pre-AI 24mm/f2.8 lens (view), ISO100, merged from three exposures – two at 0.0 E.V and one taken at +2.o EV. I thought it was a proper set of brackets, but I had maxed the camera out at 1/8000th and two images were taken at that speed – I decided to let Photomatix handle them as three exposures, and it came out OK. Advantage was it gave me three versions to choose from for deghosting each of the paddleboarders.

It feels summery right down to the sun spots. Well done!

Lovely. I especially like the capture of light.

Thanks Ryan. It was a fantastic day – this low angle winter light is delightful, when the sun is out which is not often enough sometimes.

This is a first for me. I’ve never seen standup paddleboarders before. You sure have some dramatic skies out your way, too.

Hi Ken. They are a fairly new thing, at least to me. I first noticed them a couple of years ago, but last year they suddenly seemed quite common around here. That is the paddleboarders I am talking about. I have been appreciating the skies for a very long time – a nice winter day around here very often means sunny breaks with some very nice skies.

You’ve done it again, seascape with clouds providing high drama, and a touch of human interest off to one side. If only we humans could confine our impact on this magnificent environment to a few ripples on the water.

Thanks Val! I agree completely – ripples rather than splashes, or as we seem to be up to the equivalent of a large meteor strike.
