Fernwood West II

Back to Fernwood in Victoria for some black and white shots. These were all taken a few weeks ago when I ran a Fernwood series.

Above is the back side of Victoria High School. Massive and old it is still very much in use (two of my kids graduated from here). This view was not visible until last year, at least not for 40 years or more. A seismic upgrade saw the breeze block shop buildings removed a few months ago from the end of this street.

These buildings are all on the west side of the Fernwood neighbourhood, near to or along Cook Street.

I love the Polish deli, it’s where I go for salami and a poppy-seed roll/cake. I am sometimes found in there having a Reuben sandwich, or their handmade perogies.

.

Just what was this architect thinking? Maybe he was watching XXX movies and drinking XXX lager, while drawing up the design.

    • When in Victoria, it’s the place to go for perogies.
Glad you like that last shot. I could not believe the arrangement of stairs, and not wanting to trespass there was only one vantage point.

  1. That Victoria High School photo has a lot of 1912 in it, not just the school but the cottage on the right, with its bell-cast roof and stuccoed over dormer window. All the photo needs is a horse and buggy, or a vintage car from 1912, and away you go!

    • Thanks Richard. Somewhere there is an early photo of the school that shows it standing up like this in the distance from roughly this view. I think that is what inspired me to take this picture. A bit of judicious photoshop work could easily drop an early car onto the road.
