Iris Bug IV

IMG_6145-Edit

This wasp is another in my mini-series that takes a close look at the inhabitants, or users, of my patch of irises . I have not idea what the wasp was up to, but it seems like a deliberately artistic pose.

The iris petal seems shaped and designed for long bodied poseurs.

Canon EOS 5D MkII, Canon EF 100mm/f2.8 macro lens, ISO100, f-2.8, 1/800th second, hand-held. Original shot at about 1:1 with a resolution of 5616 x 3744 pixels, cropped to 3464 x 2651. Processed with Lightroom 4 and Topaz Clarity.

  1. Wow. Wow. Thank you for sharing these shots.
I am not sure how I stumbled onto this last page, except to say that I clicked my way here. Did you take the pics at the Old Masset Cemetery? That was my original google search objective. I have been there and have never forgotten the experience.
    Farewell, Cat 2.

    • Hey Paul-Emile, thanks for visiting and commenting! I am glad you had fun poking around my blog, you seem to have found a lot to look at. Cat 2 is missed, though not at all by Cat 1 who has taken back all the previously usurped spaces.

I have not taken pictures in the Old Massett Cemetery, or even been through the gates. I don’t think picture taking is welcome there. As you have seen on this blog though, I have taken pictures in the Village of Masset Cemetery. Confusingly subtle difference in names for two adjacent communities.

I’ll be up that way for a couple of days in a few weeks, so there will likely be more Haida Gwaii photos coming along in May.

  2. Unusual looking petal but the composition is inherently attractive with that soft background. Sharp where it needs to be, but I’m really not sure I want to be that close to a wasp!

    • Hi Andy, I think the petal had just released from it’s bud. I was surprised by one doing that – it just popped out, then the others did too. I wished I had a timelapse running. It feels safer when I have a camera between me and the wasp, though it probably is not.

  3. Not sure why I put a like to this, dislike those critters as they can land me in the hospital. Very nice macro shot though with perfect focusing. And you are right about that iris petal providing a good background.

    • Hi Joseph – thank you for liking this shot, even though you are allergic to the subject matter! I don’t much like them either, but can tolerate them in this setting, as compared to trying to eat my lunch at the same time as I am. Salmon in particular they seem unable to resist.
