Corrugated Iris

Another shot from the irises in my garden. Even with the flowers all dead and gone, there is still lots to look at in the iris patch. This is the only highly magnified macro that I got of an iris leaf before I was distracted by a fly that landed in my shot .
This shot is nicely abstract without a fly standing on it. I like the way the focus plane creates a leading line. Better yet I like the way the long triangles in the leaf bokeh echo the shape of iris leaves. Which is why I processed the following crops from the image.

Canon EOS 5D MkII, Canon FD 50mm/f3.5 macro lens, reverse mounted on extension tubes, ISO640, f-16, 1/125th. Processed with Lightroom 4 and Topaz Detail.

Okay, so don’t laugh but all I think of in the first image is a big green scary monster opening it’s mouth full of crazy teeth! Did I mention it’s been a really long day? 🙂

I am trying not to laugh, and the idea of a green pointy mouth like this helps. But, it is just an iris leaf!

Very cool. A macro is definitely on my next-thing-to-get list.

They are a lot of fun to work with. This one is 40 years old, and reverse mounted to get the most magnification. A pretty economical way to get a decent macro lens.

These are fantastic.
Such wonderful texture.

Thanks Lisa. It seems almost unnatural to me – so regular, as if manufactured with a machine. I suppose that the closer one looks at nature, the more often that regularity is the case.

It seems like I ought to be able to run my fingers across my monitor and feel the ridges in the leaves….
I like these a lot; the middle one is my favorite, because it is the most abstract one of the three.

Thanks Melinda. It is interesting how rotating a single image can change it from something that we think we recognise, to something quite different. I think that is my favourite of the three as well. The light is of course an important part of the success of these shots as well.

I forgot to mention that I noticed your use of the word “corrugated”….

I figured you would notice. And it is corrugated, so not even a lie. I have to find it where I can as it is a pretty unusual building material around here.

Well, I am glad you found it on an iris leaf! Good work on that.

I like these a lot. When you have a macro lens (and know how to use it) you never run out of interesting things to photograph.

That is very true Ken. All kinds of interesting things not normally noticed with the naked eye.
